I decided to redo it. I ended up doing a whole new one without Mrs. Coulter and her monkey. I like it better. I have certainly come a long way.

Here it is. I wish I had had the time to use pen and ink for the linework, but that's okay. Still lots of work to be done on it.

Jessica Hische

A couple weeks ago Designer Jessica Hische came to the Universtiy in neighboring town to lecture. It was awesome. SHE was awesome. I really loved everything she said, and it was nice to be able to laugh about art jokes.

I really admire her career. She is doing something so new and different, and she's doing it well. It was inspiring for me to see a woman make such a name for herself in a such male-heavy profession. I'm going into Illustration, and right now it seems like my competition is mainly women. But when you look at the business it's mostly men.

Anyway. Everyone should go and look at her site. It's fantastic. My favorite things are the Daily Drop Caps.

The Myth, The Hero's Journey, and some more Character Design

My focus for my BFA project creating a graphic novel inspired by the modernization of a myth. I'll take a Celtic myth (Lleu and the Tynghedau of Arianrhod) and using the classic "Hero's Journey" pattern to create a modern retelling of it. By modern, I mean in the last few hundred years. The story, of course, will follow the 17 steps of the Hero's Journey as laid out by Joseph Campbell.

I've decided to set it in an alternate-historic WWII Britain. Sorta steampunky, but not in the Victorian Era. And not really steampunky at all, really. The world I'm portraying will just be a little bit different than what we know the world to be. They'll be more advanced in some areas, and less in others. The war will take different turns.

I'm planning on the show going up sometime next September, a month after I graduate.

I'm incredibly excited. Seriously. I love mythology (especially Celtic) and I LOVE the Hero's Journey. It's fascinating, especially when you realize that almost every story or narrative you read falls into that pattern. Go read about it, it's awesome. But...really, I'm going crazy with excitement. I already have a pinboard on pinterest dedicated to finding things that inspire me. Mostly it's just propaganda posters and fashion, but soon I'll be looking around for artistic inspiration as well (mood, etc).

Here's another drawing of Flora. This is her in a wheat field. Not being consumed by flames, even though it looks like it. This is from the part of the story that lines up with the "Belly of the Whale" step in Campbell's 17 steps. She's not the main character, I just love drawing her. She's like...a semi-main character. She has her own little hero's journey.

Next to her there's a really rough sketch of some bombs being dropped. It's...yeah, you can't really tell they are bombs. Yet.

Flora

HELLO, HI.

I'm feeling amazing. A couple weeks ago in my Business of Illustration class we presented our portfolios and helped each other decide which area of Illustration we would fit best into. I showed mine to the class, and we decided that it is definitely not children's book material, but could possibly fit into young adult novels, which is a small market. I explained that my work tends to focus on darker themes and that I tend to develop elaborate backstories to all my pieces.

So then my teacher said "What about graphic novels?" The class agreed.

Wow. I had never even thought of that!

So, today I spoke with m BFA advisor, and discussed my current plans on doing "Modernizing the Myth" as my final project. I was planning on doing 2 modernized myths from each of the Celtic Nations. But then I told her about the class discussion about how I want to do graphic novels someday, and she suggested that I just change my project to completing my own graphic novel and then sending it in to be published. The idea intimidates me, especially because of those people I know (coughJakeWyattcough) who are so incredible with it.

It intimidates me, and that is why I decided to do it. I'm starting a graphic novel. It's still going to be a modernized version of a celtic myth. I'm planning on doing a WWII-era retelling of the 4th branch of the Mabinogion. I'll be keeping you updated on my progress and the re-telling of the story as I complete this project. It will be on display in March. I'm pretty excited...

On another topic, here are some drawings I did in Wales this summer. This way, this post isn't just purely text and rambling, and it's sorta related because of Wales.

On the same topic (Chepstow Castle being the nearest to J.K. Rowling's childhood home) here are some drawings of Harry Potter characters. After seeing the movie, I decided to read the book. I couldn't get Daniel Radcliffe's stupid face out of my head so I decided to redraw the characters I wanted to imagine differently. Obviously I didn't draw a Harry Potter that I liked. So here are some others.

I finished the design for my business cards the other day. Actually, boyfriend Sean helped a lot with it, because he's brilliant at design and I'm not so much. So, here's the final thingy.

We got them printed two days ago. It was a pretty sketchy place, honestly. I thought they'd be more professional, but they ended up cutting them all a little crooked, which bothered me. But I didn't get that many printed, just enough to take to Wales with me. So I'll reprint them with someone more professional when I get back. Hopefully letterpress. :)

Winter Semester 2011 : An Overview

Here are some more things from Winter Semester. I finished a few weeks ago (and it feels great to be done, until fall at least) and I took some really helpful and great classes. One, Illustration 5, is my very last Illustration class before I start preparing for my BFA project, and then graduation. I did an ongoing theme of Modernizing Myths (mostly from the British Isles) which I think I will continue with for my BFA.

Here's my third project of the semester. It's called The Valkyrie. (Valkyrie is from the Old Norse word valkyrja, which means "chooser of the slain.") In Norse Mythology, The Valkyries were women who would choose who would die during battle. I'd like to think this particular woman is Brynhildr. I love me some death-themed art. :D

I'd like to do a whole lot more with this. Maybe someday soon. I suppose I do have about 2 months of free time to do what I want. But I have a feeling that Verbal Vomit will be taking up much of that time for now. :)

Also, this girl sorta looks like my best friend Erika. Actually, she looks a LOT like Erika. It's kinda freaky. I think it's the eyes. Or maybe the scarf. Erika wears a lot of scarves. Maybe it's the impending doom and symbols of death flying around her. Just kidding.

I also took Character Design, which was lovely. It was taught by the amazing Jake Parker. I was lucky to have him, since he was only a visiting professor. You should really check out his stuff. Seriously. Click the link. It's fantastic. If you have kids, buy them the Missile Mouse comics. He's been working on that character since he was a teenager. I personally love the Robot and the Sparrow. Here's a sample of some character design work. Just one picture, because I didn't put enough into that class to be proud of much of what I did.

Another class I took was Typography (turns out I'm definitely meant to be an Illustrator and NOT a designer). For the final project, I did an 8 page magazine spread. I chose to redesign NME. I'm a little afraid to post it because it's a real magazine and all. I also made a typeface. We were allowed to use Fontstruct. No stairstepping, and no soft edges. I call it Soviet because my teacher said it sorta looked like Russian Propaganda lettering.

"Welsh Hymns"
For my Welsh 305 class we had a lovely project that I'll never forget. We were able to translate a bunch of hymns into Welsh for our own use. Many of the hymns were written by Reverend Colin Gordon-Farleigh, a Welsh Reverend living in England who writes a hymn a day. He actually came to visit a couple months ago. It was nice to speak Welsh to a Welshman again. :) Not that my teachers and students don't help with keeping up my language, it's just nice to speak with a natural.

So, I was able to do the cover for the hymnbook. It was a quick and simple project, but I think it still captures the green-ness and beauty of the South Wales landscape I based it on. Carmarthenshire, to be specific.

Another project I've been working on in my free time has been re-doing some old pieces. One, The Gray King, I did back in 2009. It was alright, and at the time I had just broken it off with my fiance, and I felt that I needed a change in my life. Including how I did art. It was done with a completely new technique which I've become very fond of since. It also has a feeling of breaking free of something.

Here's the original, done in November of 2009.

And here's the revised, better one. I like the t-shirt better than the weird brown cloak thing. This illustration is from a book written and set in the 1960's. So the t-shirt makes it more modern, but it also still has the feeling of fantasy.

In the realm of freelance, I was able to do some small illustrations for my University's travel magazine about Couchsurfing. It's an online system that allows people to sign up to let people stay at their houses for free while abroad. I drew four separate but different couches. I'm not sure when the magazine will be published.

I was also able to do rework a piece for a magazine for Quarterly West, a journal from the University of Utah. I already blogged about it, but I'll include it in here anyway. I'm excited, because I'll be on the cover of the very last printed edition! Looking forward to the publication.

At the end of the semester was the student show. Two of my pieces made the cut and were displayed in the HFAC with the rest of the wonderful student work. I got a crappy cell phone picture of one of my pieces. The other one, Magnolias, was on the main floor and I never really got around to taking a photo of it.

After the show went up, I was in class and my teacher, whose opinion I really respect, gestured that I should come talk to him. I was nervous, because he's very honest and upfront about what I need to work on. He looked at me and said "I've been very impressed with the work you've done this semester." It was such a compliment.

Anyway. There's the last four months. I'll post more from my sketchbooks soon too.

Painting on Toms

Toms goes around to different Nordstroms and hires local artists to paint on shoes for a day. Here's some cool photos for you to check out. It was such a great experience!

Ys in Steps

First I did the background using THESE BRUSHES found at Bittbox. The best site in the world.

Then I scanned in my original linework (done with a dip pen) and put it on top of the background. I decided I hated her head in the one on the left so I redrew it and liked it a lot better.

I added some more linework for the chains around her legs and also started sketching in her hands and feet. Then I blocked in the color on the body.

Then I moved the bubbles up nearer to her head, so it didn't look like she was emitting gasses. I also finished her hands and feet and the larger chain in the front. I decided I wanted to crop it so I blacked out the rest of the painting.

Then I actually cropped it and added hair and bubbles. Lots of bubbles. I fixed the dress so it looked better. I turned this one in for class and my professor had a few things I needed to change.

So I took his advice and added lighting to her face as well as more bubbles nearer to her body. I also added another chain running diagonally in the background in order to give it a bit more depth.

Modernized Myth #4 - "Ys"

Yeah, you haven't seen Modernized Myth #3 yet. I skipped right to four, because I'm not done with #3 yet. But trust me, it's got death in it. No worries.

This one is from the Breton myth about the beautiful Island of Ys. This is when the King throws his daughter, Dahut, into the ocean after the island is swallowed by the sea.

Here's the Work in Progress! There are still a few more things I want to do to it.

Ys is pronounced "ees." Like "Reese."

The Land of the Dead Extended

I've been working on extending the Land of the Dead piece so it can fit on the cover of a magazine, Quarterly West, for their next issue. I think it's turned out pretty good so far! Especially because it's all digital. I've been trying to improve my digital painting skills recently.

Also, I added my boyfriend's face in there. He's in the middle, up in the front. Like...RIGHT in the middle.

So, here it is. The big block of white is where the text on the back will go.

Some Sketchbook things

Good thing he appreciated the sack of bloody teeth.)

Process of Branwen the Blessed

I have some of the steps I took while doing this piece. Also, I have a way better version than the one I posted yesterday. It's at the bottom.

Step One: Linework. I used brown India Ink and a calligraphy pen.

Step 2: Starting to block in color.

Step 3: Lighting on the arms and hands and some wall.

Step 4: More Lighting and an outline of the city outside the window. Also some wallpaper.

Step 5: The Bird is here now! Playing around with the lighting.

Step 6: Pushed the bird back a little bit. Still trying to make the lighting work.

For these last two I made her look a little more like a woman instead of a really pretty man. I also made her arm and the bird's wing break the box a bit. Her eyes aren't as weird looking, and the city looks a bit better. I replaced the rolled up note (which looked like a giant joint no matter what I did) with an unrolled note.

In this one I adjusted the saturation and put more detail into her eyes, lips, and the note.

I think there's still more to be done, but I'm happy turning this one in.

Modernized Myth #2: Branwen the Blessed

Here's the second of the 5 myths I've been modernizing. This isn't exactly modern...but whatever. I had a lot of fun doing it. It's a version of the myth from the Second Branch of the Welsh Mabinogion. Read about it here: Branwen in the Mabinogion.

I'd really like to make Branwen more weary and tired looking. Also, I need to make the note look less like a joint, and I need to move it so it's not clashing with the edge of the painting. I also need to work on the city in the background. Make it look more industrial and "steam punk." I just don't have time yet. :)

I was a bit disappointed that I didn't have any chosen, but now I know that I need to really step it up if this people are going to be my competition someday. I'm feeling very humbled right now.

The Táin in stages

I started this a little bit late into the project, but I wanted to post the steps I took in finishing the project. Almost the entire thing was digital, save the line work and a bit of paint (as you can see in the first picture) and I think it turned out looking like I didn't do much digital work on it. Besides the kid in the background. He looks totally digital. But I'll work on it.

I scanned this first one in and made it a separate layer. I then made that layer "Multiply" and started painting underneath it, so it would still have the tooth and grain of the paper to it.

For my Character Design class we are making our own versions of some of the characters from The Wizard of Oz (which I don't think I've ever seen all the way through). Here are mine, and another character that we were assigned to design based on a short description.

I feel like the scarecrow's hand is in an awkward place though...

Captain Bill Wheedles is an ex-sailor with a wooden leg from the knee down. His head is almost bald and what little hair he has is grizzled. His eyes are pale blue with a gentle look to them, and his face is round, rugged, and bronzed.

I drew him filling up a kiddy pool for his grandkids. While smoking.

Modernized Myth #1: Táin Bó Cúailnge (Unfinished)

For my Illustration 5 class I'm modernizing myths from 5 different countries. The first is an Irish myth called Táin Bó Cúailnge. I based this piece on that myth, but in a modern setting. Cú Chulainn, the Irish hero (AKA the Hound of Ulster) is approached by a supernatural woman, Morrígan, who offers him her love. He rejects her, and she takes her revenge by interfering in his battles. In the myth, she messes him up about 3 times in different ways. At the end, Cú Chulainn ends up fighting and killing his best friend and foster brother.

In my interpretation, Colin was approached by Morgan, who had a crush on him. He explains that he doesn't feel the same way, and she turns out to be manipulative and disturbed. She digs her claws into his best friend, and drives them apart. His best friend ends up cornering him and beating him up under the manipulation of Morgan.

I don't know how incredibly solid my take on it is, but I don't really care. It made for a cool illustration.

What I still need to do:

1. Make the guy in the background have a more dynamic pose...maybe more like a superhero looking pose.
2. Make Morgan's face more...vengeful
3. Add an Irish Wolfhound to the left, barking at Colin's friend and Morgan. I want to add the wolfhound because Cú Chulainn is referred to sometimes as "The Hound of Ulster" which is a wolfhound.

The next myth I'm doing is one of the stories from The Mabinogion. Right now I'm leaning toward the story of Manawydan, specifically within the third branch.
Following this will be a Norse myth. I haven't decided on a specific one. Does anybody have any suggestions?

Celtic Illumination

So I've decided on the theme of my BFA project. I don't quite know how I am going to present it, but I know what I want to do.

I watched the movie "The Secret of Kells" last month, and I LOVED it. For my BFA, I am going to do Irish or Welsh mythology and tales illustrated in the style of The Book of Kells, and other illuminated celtic manuscripts (Mulling, Dimma, Durrow, etc). I started looking at scans of the pages of these books and I was blown away. I've been becoming increasingly obsessed with them the past week, and have started practicing a lot of the designs in my sketchbook.

I've revised this a bit since last time. I made the wings on the dragonfly look better. I like it much better, and I'm going to keep it like this for the final.

There are other bits of it that I still want to spend a lot more time on sometime, but it will probably need to wait until Christmas break.

The Crylics Album Cover - ALMOST FINISHED

I've been working on an album cover for my boyfriend's band The Crylics' album Ghost Surf. I've really loved doing this, even though its taken me forever and school has kept taking the priority.
But now, I'm almost finished. Usually when I say almost finished, I never actually mean ALMOST. I just say that. But this is for real.

All I need to do is:
- add a little person wiped out next to surfboard
- make surfboard look better, instead of like a slice of dill pickle
-add some words to the sign "Danger: Ghost surf"
- possibly make sign bigger...something about it feels off right now
- fix the little details.
- up the contrast, so the beach doesn't all blend together with the ocean

That is, until the feedback comes back from the band.

Another reason I love this so much is because it also can count as one of my assignments for my art class I'm in right now. :D

This, I thought, was due today, so I spent the last two days trying to finish it. Turns out nothing is due until the end of the semester! Oh well, I got it done, so I don't have to worry about it later. Actually, that was a lie. It's not done. Not even close to where I want it.

This is just a work in progress. I want to make the dead people greener and creepier, so Will and Lyra really stand out as being the only people there who are alive and warm. Also, I need to work on the wings of the harpies and also the dragonflies.

Here are the last few pages of the sketchbook I just finished. I beat a record! I filled up a sketchbook in a little over a month. Wow. I just love watercolor Moleskines. I searched everywhere on campus for a new one to replace this one, but I could only find one of the wee pocket ones. Thank goodness for online shopping!

The face is definitely more menacing than before, which is exactly what I wanted it to look like. Thanks, Boyfriend for helping with that. :)

It's STILL unfinished though. All I really need to do is make the cat look like a real cat instead of a stuffed animal cat. Other than that, I'm pretty pleased with it. I'm beginning to really love digital.

Hey! I was looking through my hard drive (named Mr. Terabyte) and I came across some really old art that I never posted on here. I think I've even lost the originals to most of these. Actually, I'm pretty sure two of them are with my ex-boyfriend, who may or may not wish my death.

I sort of miss this kind of stuff. I've moved so much towards realism....except not too much, compared to others in my classes. But still, sometimes I miss not being able to draw humans, so I could just draw robots and monsters all the time.

I'm illustrating His Dark Materials series by Philip Pullman. This is my attempt at proving to myself that I can be a self-motivated Illustrator. So far, so good. Here's the first one. I'm liking it.

What it needs is a little more detail in Oxford, and maybe the animals.

This is Rose at Tintern Abbey. Okay, so she didn't really go there, but I wish I could have flown her to Wales and back to take the picture.
I like this a lot, although there are some things I would fix. There's not much of a story going on. Also, I need to get more detailed on some of the stonework. But otherwise, I think the stonework is coming along nicely.

Here are the other two studies I did of Rose. She wore different dresses from her own vintage collection, which made me really excited to paint. Each one of the ones I did of Rose looks a little bit different than how she actually looks, but I think I captured certain parts of her well with each one.
Also, she wasn't actually holding a bloody dagger, nor was she covered in blood. Hahaha, I'm sure you probably gathered that.

I did this for my Senior Illustration Studio 1 class. The assignment was to do our dream project. Something we've always wanted to do. So I chose to illustrate something from Susan Cooper's The Gray King. This is at the end of the book when Will is starting to wake the sleepers. The swans come out before the sleepers.

This is done with Gouache.

Mermaids

I finished the illustrations for a short story that is going to be published in BYU's science fiction journal Leading Edge. The story is about killer mermaids who live in a spring that is the source of water for some orange groves. Every eclipse the orange farmers lure divers into the spring to be killed, which makes their trees really healthy and stuff. It's pretty cool. Also creepy.

This first one I did about a year ago, and then I did a re-do. The third one is what it turned out like. For class we had to take a piece and redo it and make it better.

I think the finished one turned out a lot better than the very first one.

Here's a really mediocre landscape that I did for my plein aire painting class. It's of Utah Lake. The second one is of a lady with an eye patch with the same landscape behind her. All I have felt like drawing lately have been people with eye patches.

I have finally finished War of the Worlds, which means I've also finished ENGL51. I've been working on this same course for a year straight...I'm happy and sad to be done with it.

Here are the final images for the war of the worlds thingy. The broadcast will be playing as these appear on their screen.

The text on some is a bit off, but i'll be fixing that later.

This is the start of my final for my special problems class. It's a book jacket for Shakespeare's Richard III.
I based the entire thing around one line, which to me, ties the entire play together. It is "Let me weigh heavy on thy soul to-morrow."
He is in his tent the night before battle, and all the ghosts of everybody he has killed or had murdered come back to haunt him, and they all say that line. To me, it is the point in the play when he sees that he has lost his humanity.

This is just the beginning. I'll have more ghosts swirling around him, suffocating him.

Oh, and thanks to Joseph for the hand in the hair idea.

I took this with the camera on my phone, so the colors are wonky. It is in prismacolor pencils.
The piece about the girl with the living hair is going well. So far I only have half of it started. I have her face, her hair, and her hand. On the right side I will be finishing the freak show tent and the posters on the fence. Her parents died when she was young, and her cruel uncle was her only living relative. He was greedy, and put her his freak show because her hair could move and think on its own.
In this she is escaping.

For one of my classes we're doing character design. I started out with the idea of a girl whose hair has a mind of it's own, and it gets her in trouble and just causes a whole mess of things. My first idea turned out nicely, but I wasn't satisfied, there was no depth to it. So, I decided that she would be a 15 year old orphan with living hair, in 1900....at a freak show. Which was awesome, because I got to research freak shows. They're pretty sad, and creepy. Anyway, so her freak show name is Mary, the Modern-aged Medusa.

So, here are my ideas for her so far, and the last one in pencil is my final one. These are in order from the very first idea i drew, to the last.

I decided that there was too much blood in the last one to be acceptable at BYU. They're really strict with stuff like that. So, here's my BYU version, which I think I'm liking better.

I added splatter marks........So I guess there's more blood now. But it's more subtle. I mean, the guy just got violently stabbed to death by his double. I got carried away though. I made the mirror look cracked, and I added blood and a big streak leading to the ground from the crack. Like he slammed his head into the glass.

But I removed that. I just wanted to see how it would look.

Update: I also finished this one. It's still in its beginning stages, but I am liking how it is turning out.

This is before he kills his doppelganger, and after he humiliates this guy while gambling. His double comes into the room and whispers stuff to him.

Goodman Brown, and his wife, Faith when they are told to look at each other before they are baptized with blood. The colors are a bit weird in the web image. Usually it's darker.
